Great history lesson and worth visiting

The former seat of the Kings of Munster, the Rock of Cashel was handed over to the church in 1101 and became the seat of the Archbishop. Today, five buildings remain, including an impressive round tower, 12th century chapel, 13th century cathedral, and the Hall of the Vicar's Choral.

    Susan made this a 5
Our first day in Ireland we stopped at the Rock of Cashel. We had purchased tickets on line (and it made getting in a little easier) There's a car park that costs a few euros (don't recall the exact amount). We got into a tour lead by Susan. She's fantastic. On a cold, windy and at times rainy day, we could hear everything she had to say. She's very knowledgable and made the experience. Very engaging presentation.

    Just amazing!
I wanted to see this place for quite a while and now I finally had the chance to explore it to the fullest! The Rock of Cashel was the seat of the kings of Munster, and according to legend even St. Patrick himself came here to convert King Aenghus to Christianity. You can park close-by and then walk up toward the entrance. Here you can buy a ticket which costs 8€. You can buy them online as well, but we just walked up and got our tickets right then and there. Then you either walk around on your own, or join one of the guided tours which are free. One piece of important information in advance: If you want to see the Cormac’s Chapel, then you should get a ticket in advance, as only a certain number of people are allowed inside and the number of tours leading inside are limited as well. I sadly missed that timeslot and the next tour would have taken place in 2 hours, which was sadly too late for me; so as an advice: get that ticket right away! Cormac’s Chapel is the finest, most complete and probably one of the earliest Romanesque churches in Ireland. I have sadly only seen pictures of it, but it truly looks impressive and stunning! You can walk around, look at the high tower, a high cross, the Romanesque chapel, an absolutely stunning Gothic cathedral, an abbey, the Hall of the Vicars Choral and a Tower House from the 15th century. The largest remaining structure is St. Patrick’s Cathedral, which was built between 1235 and 1270. It is just breathtaking to walk inside and see these old stones for yourself. Of course most of it lies in ruins today, but it still hasn’t lost any of its charms. Overall, I can only say: the Rock of Cashel is truly stunning and you’re missing out if you’re not visiting this!
