More an experience than a museum

The Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum excitingly captures the story of how Foynes became one of the great aviation hubs of the world between 1937-1945. Walk in the footsteps of JFK, Bob Hope, Eleanor Roosevelt & many other dignitaries, movie stars & refugees who landed at Foynes during World War II. Throughout the original terminal building this truly unique story is told by way of original film in a 1940’s style cinema, showcases covering the war years & numerous exhibits on the romantic flying boat era including the chance to board a life size replica of the Boeing 314 Flying Boat. Foynes & the Flying Boats will be forever connected with the invention of Irish Coffee as they combined to give us this uniquely Irish treat. Learn all about this historic event by watching a wonderful 3D holographic show re-enacting this famous night back in 1943 & after why not taste a delicious Irish Coffee in its original home.

Nice look at pre Jet travel stop off
A snapshot of history of how travel across the Atlantic occurred pre Jet era. I have visited before and it had not changed significantly with a floor closed as undergoing refurb. However the young lady on reception was more than happy to fill in everybody on what was there and what would be happening and it was appreciated. It is not an aviation museum nor does it sell itself as such but provides an interesting insight of what occurred and probably understates its significance in providing a stop off point for cross Atlantic travel during WW2. It was a good couple of hours spent on a Sunday.

Excellent and worth a visit if you have time.
I will be first to say that when it was suggested we crosss over to Limerick to visit a flying boat museum I wasn't excited. However afterwards I was really pleased we did, the museum isn't large but it is extensive, it not only extensively covers the history of the Trans Atlantic flying boats but covers trade win the Shannon Estuary region, the history of Irish Coffee, Maureen O'Hara and much more. We managed to crash two flying boats on the simulator, we enjoyed the Hologram and over all had a great time. Do spend some time in the Boeing Flying Boat (oh the leg room and luxury)
