    Well Worth the (Free) Visit
We did the free 1-hour tour of 9 major items in the archaeological collection. They spanned 5,000 years of Irish history. The items were really well explained and put in context. The Treasury items were amazing (friends went back just to see more). The “Bog Men” are a bit horrendous for small kids. Other items were very well displayed. The museum is big and cavernous, with lots of reverberating background noise that made it hard to hear the guide (might have been better with earpieces). Do the tour early so you can go back to see items of interest afterwards (we did the 3:30 tour so it was too late to backtrack before closing. Museum building is amazing too: painted enamel Victorian doorways, amazing mosaic floors, etc.

Just know what you're getting into
I can't give this museum less than 5 circles because it was free and included some incredible exhibits, but to be honest it freaked me out. I had been looking forward to seeing the bog bodies after reading about them, but when I was in the room I realized "oh yeah, this is human remains. why did I think I would like this?" In the bog body exhibit they actually do a good job hiding the bodies behind a corner so you can decide whether you want to look, but in the rest of the museum there's plenty of skeletons and skulls just hanging out there in the middle of everything. Great for some people. Not for me. Before you go just ask yourself whether you (and any family members you bring) are prepared to view what's on offer.
