Playa Grande Surf Camp and Surf School, Province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica

The BEST Surf instruction around!

We made reservations (called "Playa Grande Surf Club -- PGSC" also) for 5 teenagers and an adult and had a fantastic time! Most of us were beginners -- only surfing a few times in Hawaii. The beach was spectacular with waves ranging from large "tubes" to smaller gentle beginner waves. Soft sandy beach and only waist/chest deep for us. Great instruction not only in technique but on safety and how to fall off the board and not get hurt in shallower water. We had 1:3 instructor to student ratio. We had the beach to ourselves -- compared to Tamarindo down the way that was crowded, expensive and rocky beach. Only $35 for 2 hours of instruction! Kind, pleasant, accommodating and absolutely the BEST surf school on the beach!! I can't wait to return again!!

Located between Punta Uva y Punta Manzanillo. It is an extensive beach with médium size waves. It is not so plain and there are several small bays along the beach. There is a dirt road all along the beach. I recommend to take the road and get to the end were there are less tourists and visitors, so you will find a more peaceful space. There are a lot of palm trees at the side of the shore, making it a different kind of beach. The ivory sand color gives a touch of cleaness and beautiful landscape to enjoy.

Would not rent us surf board and we went twice
We walked to PGSC to rent two boards our first morning in Playa Grande and were told we could not because it was low tide and the manager was not there. We discussed the tide and said that we wanted to rent them for the week and that we would wait for the tide to come in at 2:30. The guy said we still had to come back and could rent them at noon. This was after he showed us a bunch of boards and discussed the right length for each of our kids (who already know how to surf). We went back and noon as they instructed and we were told we could not rent them since the manager was not there and the guy did not want to lose his job. So we walked next door to another place and rented two boards for the week no problem.
