Off Piste - Experience you are not in a typical ski resort...By exploring the domain of La Grave-La Meije, you are not in a typical ski resort. This is a real mountain environment as you head down in an unmarked, and non-patrolled area at your own risk. You must be aware of all mountain hazards including rocks, avalanches, crevasses, and be ready for the possibility of drastic weather changes. In 30 minutes, the cable-car (téléphérique) takes you to 3200m, where you can create your own itinerary for the descent. Simply the best place to ski piste.
If you enjoy skiing off piste then this is the Mecca of freeride skiing. Really not for the faint hearted. No piste no be found. Not many people skiing, really you can ski for 40 mins and not see anyone. If you've not skied here before get a guide. You will also need helmet and transceiver it's really stupid not to. I've skied Le Grave only 3 times but it's just a fantastic place. Limited night life. Nice church to look at but really not much to do other that Ski, eat and repeat.

    Mecca on Ski's
La Grave.... say's it all. Every time I hit this mountain I am in awe. Forget the ESF guides and try and hook up with the extreme operators in the village. The lift is a disaster as well as the amenities on the mountain but that's not what you are here for. Go right off the lift and the off piste opportunities are insane. Wide open bowl to chutes to trees. Massive vertical drop!!! Go left and you get a somewhat easier tour that you don't need a guide for. Having a top guide is key since he can bring you to some extreme runs that are right off the lift with little hiking. The first visit I stayed in Serre Chevalier and the next Les 2 Alpes which are both 30+ minutes away by car. There was supposed to be access from Les 2 Alpes by lift but there was too much snow. Both times I had awesome snow and I will say that it was my #1 lift served experience of my 43 years of skiing. Not for the Vail Crowd!!!!
