Serre Chevalier Vallée Briancon, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France

4.0 (680 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Hautes-Alpes Ski & Snowboard Areas

Serre Chevalier is a hidden gem!

We really enjoyed skiing the slopes of Serre Chevalier in mid January. The resort has an excellent variety of runs with lots of long cruisy blues. Lifts are good and during our stay they were very quiet. The resort is very extensive so you feel you cover a lot of area over time. Signposting is clear throughout. The snow was very good and all runs were well groomed so rarely icy. Good restaurants are dotted all over the slopes. We stayed in Briancon which is a characterful French town with lots of good accommodation options and restaurants. I've visited a number of ski resorts throughout Europe and to date Serre Chevalier is probably my favourite.

Very good resort with a few things to be aware of
When there is (fresh) snow, this place is magic, loads of off-piste opportunities with different difficulty level. The slopes are well prepared and it does not feel too crowded, however there are bottlenecks as some lifts has low capacity or is the only way to cross a ridge. That said, it is still a high quality place. Located in the south makes it sensitive to mild winters, but a lot of slopes are on the north side of the mountain, so the snow is not too bad even if the temperature is high. Few restaurants in the slopes and in general relatively expensive. Some places are genuinely great, while others feels like a scam. In all a very good place to go.

    Excellent weather and ski field
Excellent ski field with four valleys to ski and easy access from each valley to another. Lift queues always reasonable and a good variety of on and off piste, beginners and advanced skiing. The high probability of sunshine makes skiing here awesome but comes at the cost of having poorer snow quality that tends to get skies out by mid afternoon. Would return.
