A place of pilgrimage
A lovely and peaceful church, but worth exploring the whole sanctuary, especially the chapel at the back where people leave items for Mary. (Mainly handmade, craft type items, fascinating to see) Catch bus number 2 from Rijeka, there's a stop just outside the church.

Madonna of Trsat Sanctuary -must see
Importance of this place may not be properly explained even by visit / pilgrimage of Pope itself.. Its a story of Our Lady/Madonna chappel that miraculous appeared (by flight from Holy Land Jerusalem?) on this site, bringing local people hope and well beeing, also miraculous answer to their prays by saving people from great troubles.. At short time gained great attention, but then suddenly one day, Madonna decided to left this site and (also miraculously) re-located itself to another place, to Loretto to continue Her miraculous works (that place now beeing one of world best known pilgrimage to Our Lady/ Madonna). However, on Trsat Madonna' site remain to have great powers, more and more Attracting people for Pilgrimage. Biggest,most important and traditional event is 'Vela Gospa' Celebration (Our Great Lady holliday) which is every year on 15.08. Also on other important occasions. Generaly, a role of Madonna (Mother of God) is of huge importance per Croatian people, this considered as cult,sub-part of roman-catolic religion (significant in Croatia,Poland, other East European catholic regions,as well as in some parts of Spain, Italy, Latin America),Madonna beeing sometimes even more appreciated than Jesus, in Croatian churches character of Madonna as patron saint is more often than any other saint characters, and in many variants /functions. Our Great Lady Madonna, A Mother of God Madonna, A little Madonna, Saviour of the Seas, Our Lady of Snow, even Black Madonna variants of Madonna worshipping may be noticed in Croatian churches, and this curiosity, as well as traditional mass congragation been held traditionally only in Croatian language (rather than in Latin) from begining of Christianity among Croats, existance of Pope's Collegium Croatorum in Rome,etc and some other specifics of Croatian Catholic Church, from historic/ religions researchers may be considered and found interesting for deeper knowledge... For this - Madonna of Trsat Sanctuary is a must see when in Rijeka, as it is one of Main Pilgrimage sites in Croatia. As tourist you may to pay a visit to Church, convict,Sanctuary and Pilgrimage site.. A church itself is excellent to see, inside is Francescan Convict that keeps a lot of different Gifts (pictures, paints, golds and treasure) given by people who be saved from great danger by praying to Madonna (mostly sailors in storms, shipwrecks etc) All this you may visit free (some small donation will be appreciated), however consider take a guided tour to get full knowledge and historical hints..
