Monumental and beautiful architecture

Gradski Toranj (City Tower), a symbol of Rijeka, is a good example of a typical round tower access-point, which lead into the fortified town. Today it dominates the central part of Korzo, although it was, during its time, overtopped by more recently constructed buildings. It was built in the Middle Ages, probably on the foundations of the Late Ancient, littoral town doors. Some baroque phases of its construction can be seen on the lower part of the front of the Tower, which are characterised by a richly decorated portal, an imperial coat of arms carved out of stone and a relief of the Austrian emperors Leopold and Charles VI. Rijeka paid them special respect due to the maritime orientation they introduced into the state policies of the Austrian court.

    Emblematic tower
It’s a nice yellow building on the Korzo left hand side as one goes towards the Delta. The tower was built at the end of the eighteenth century when Rijeka was still surrounded by walls to replace a former one destroyed by an earthquake occurred in1750. It’s quite an elegant baroque building having a quadrangular base and shape and topped with a clock line containing four clocks on every side. These clocks run apparently on a single clockwork since 1873, when it replaced the former clocks which had been placed there just some years before. Over the said clock line there is still an octagonal elevated part with four arched windows on the same sides as the clocks, above them, covered with a little dome also with eight sides designed by the architect Filbert Bazarig in 1890. During the reconstruction after the earthquake a monumental portal was added to the tower. It’s a beautiful gate in the shape of a semicircular arch the ridge of which is formed by stone blocks giving it a fine aspect. In addition, the tower bears inscriptions, decorations, coat of arms reliefs end the busts of the Habsburg rulers. The coat arms consists of the two-headed Habsburg eagle which, together with an inscription dating from 1695, is over the entrance. The tower hits one in the eye when walking along the Korzo owing to the good quality of its structure, the aesthetic characteristics thereof and the fine details of its decoration. Since Korzo is the most commercial pedestrian street in Rijeka it’s therefore the normal way for all visitors to stroll There is thus no need to go anywhere in particular to admire such a marvel. It’s advisable to walk through the gate to Trg Ivana Koblera, which is a nice square, and so have the possibility to behold the back of the tower from the other side and observe the differences between the front and the back of it even as regards the clock figures. Besides the suggested way leads to interesting narrow streets where one can have a pleasant walk.

    Symbol of Rijeka
More than anything, this is the symbol I most associate with Rijeka. Walking past it many times on my trip there, it became old faithful to me. It's a lovely bit of picturesque architecture which any city in the world would be happy to have.
