Totally unspoilt, beautiful and peacful place.
We drove around the lake, as it is very big and there are plenty of places to park on the way round. If you have time, park at the waterfall car park and walk to the waterfall - fairly easy walk which takes around an hour there and back. (Take the path to the left of the river for a better view of the falls) Also worth stopping at the picturesque picnic site opposite the straining tower, although there were lots of biting midges lurking in the grass when we visited, so wear bug spray. Another good place to stop was at the Old Village car park near to the straining tower, as there are the "Giants" (tall conifers) to look at, including a large hand scupture made out of a large conifer that was hit by lightening. There is also a lovely picnic and beach area here, with outstanding views across the lake. There is a car park over the dam to the left, past the cafe and down the hill. You can follow various trails from here, either along the river to the sculpture park or up into the hills for beautiful views of the lake. The cafe was not open for indoor dining when we visited and service for take away food was extrmemely slow, with large queues, so take a picnic. The gift shop near to the cafe is worth a visit and very reasonably priced.

    A surprise in the forest.
Having never travelled in Wales before, staying here for one night was delight. We had no idea what to expect, except it was a dam in the middle of forests. We were really only there for late afternoon and the night, but in that time we went for a drive around some of the lake, went for a short walk, enjoyed seeing the bird life and took lots of photos of the dam wall and surrounds. We stayed in an excellent B n B. There was an awesome bird hide in the centre of the village where we could see lots of birds feeding in the late afternoon. It appeared that lots of hikers stopped here and no doubt those younger than us may have been more actively involved with canoes and other water-related activities etc. if they are allowed.
