Citadel Fort Adelaide, Mauritius

Wonderful View
This is a hill top Fort built by the British to defend Port Louis from the French. The fort never saw active service. The fact that it is still standing is testament itself to the high standard of construction form over two hundred years ago. Today it is a fine example and gives you provides an insight into what was regarded at the time as being the ultimate fortification to defend this little bit of the globe coloured red and then called the British Empire. You can climb the stone steps to reach the battlements from which there are wonderful panoramic views over Port Louis. It is worth a visit to the fortress if only just to take in the view. There are refreshments available and a small gift shop. You need about an hour to do the place justice.

historic
Unfortunately the fort was closed when we reached there, but the guard offered to open it if given a small bribe. We declined. Good views to be had from there of the old city and new city, the port is also visible. Nice place for couples to cootchie coo too.

Probably not worth the effort
A bit of a traipse up a hill and there is the citadel. There is a 600 m track around it (plus probably another 200 -300m if you want to end up where you started from). Not much in the way of a description of the history of the fort (and it has been vandalised unfortunately) but nice views of the city.
