Marland Estate, Oklahoma, United States

A Bit of Tuscany in northern Oklahoma

This marvelous museum tells the complete story of E.W, Marland, his loving marriages to two women, the second of whom was his first wife's niece and half his age-but they made it work. Lydie was a gracious First Lady, during E.W's term as Governor of Oklahoma. The image offered by this exquisite mansion is of two people who were passionately dedicated to detail, to being elegant hosts to a good many visitors and to making Oklahoma a good place to live.

    Beyond compare
Mr. Marland wanted to build a Tuscan-like mansion and he certainly did, in humble Ponca City. Driving up to the mansion gives the feeling of being in Italy and once inside, the feeling continues with exquisite wall coverings, flooring, window treatments and much more. I found the human stories of Mr. Marland, his wife and family to be especially fascinating and sad. Our tour guide Mark was fantastic and shared many details of their lives. Our tour lasted almost 3.5 hours even though it is advertised as a 2 hour tour. We never grew tired on this tour because the house is simply stunning in every space. If you’re anywhere near Ponca City, visit this incredible historic treasure. You’ll be mesmerized by it.

    Heartwarming
The castle is very impressive with the innovative structure and attention to detail in the furnishings. Many of the actual family pieces have been retained and the upkeep is impeccable. The story of the caste reaches a great crescendo though the financial success of the oil fortunes, however, all is lost as the family history unfolds and has a very sad ending. But wait, the current staff at the castle are outstanding in recapturing the energy of the prosperous era, our guide was exceptional as were the other employees in caring for and informing visitors and added to life to what had come to an end. Their presence added much to the atmosphere. All (visitors included) pitched in to help search for my handbag I had carelessly left in the gazebo and the guide actually found it. The original graciousness intended for the castle is alive and well!!
