Mâ-Loango Regional Museum, Pointe Noire Department, Republic of the Congo

4.0 (5 reviews) Spent Ranking #7 in Pointe Noire Speciality Museums

Worth a visit

Worth a visit to learn about the Loango kingdom and the region. The museum is really in the middle of nowhere, so maybe try and call ahead. The guide is super enthusiastic, which really catches on. Exhibits are so-so, but the region and enthusiasm make up for it.

    A Gem in the Jungle
While visiting the Gorges of Diosso north of Pointe Noire, we stopped at the Maloango Museum, also known as theDiosso Museum, a small museum housed in the former royal palace. While the collection is small, the conservator of the museum makes everything come alive. He’s very animated and anxious to show you and explain to you the items contained in the museum, their uses and stories behind some of the items collected. While he only spoke French, we managed partial translations with our driver, but mostly were able to follow along with the conservator’s demonstration and hands on explanations. His passion for his little museum and wanting to show and explain its collections made the place come alive. Cost of admission was CFA 2500 or about USD 4 and well worth it. If you’re in the area stop in for a visit, a chat with a very passionate conservator and learn about the history and culture of the Congolese.
