4.5 (56 reviews) Monday: 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM Spent Ranking #20 in Tampere Speciality Museums

Main library with an interesting design

The library is located by the Hämeenpuisto park, next to the Alexander Church. The building was opened to the public in 1986. The building's futuristic look imitates the bird capercaillie (metso in Finnish). The building has been designed by the architects Reima and Raili Pietilä.

    Named after a bird
The building seen from above resembles a big male capercaillie in his pride so the library is known in Finnish as Metso. Architect couple Raili and Reima Pietiläs' design from 1986 has assymetrical lines and unexpected nooks both inside and out. The fame of Metso earned them the priviledge to create in 1993 Mäntyniemi in Helsinki, the formal residence of our president.

    What building
The Tampere Central Library is a fantastic place and at the same time it is ART. The Library was opened in 1986 and is 6770 square meters big and did cost 13 mill Euro to build. It is a litle bit hidden be hind trees and there as some sculptures out side the front entre. The building is a cirkel and there are no corners. The building material is concrete, granit and copper. Do go inside, the colours are white, blue and green like Finland. It was fantastic to just walk around inside as tourist, what a place.
