Wat Phra That Su Thon Mongkhon Khiri, Phrae Province, Thailand

4.5 (49 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Den Chai Points of Interest & Landmarks

Magnificent temple.

This was our last destination before we left Phrae. The Burmese-Lanna style large temple is very rich with many beautiful sculptures (such as a remarkable 85 m Burmese style reclining Buddha, mythical creatures, guardian giants, former Thai great kings, etc.) and stunning architectures (such as an elaborate Lanna style 3 level octagonal based structure embellished with statues and total of 32 golden pagodas, beautiful arch doors, etc.). The temple also contains a museum in a Lanna style teak pavilion that collects some ancient artifacts plus old pictures of Lanna kingdom and former Lanna lords. Such a gorgeous temple! Worth a visit.

    Fantastic and slightly quirky.
We are perennial visitors to Thailand and have covered most of the country but this Wat was of a different order. Just off the smaller highway in Den Chai it features a massive, yes really massive reclining Buddha and the oddest huge elephant faced gold chicken sculpture. Yes really! The site is huge and we were there for a couple of hours which, seeing we had done tens of Wats in our latest 4 weeks in Thailand speaks volumes. The main temple is very attractive inside and there is even a coffee shop where you can buy drinks and ice creams. Pure Thailand at its best. Wonderful, quirky, friendly and different. If you are in the area....don't miss it!

Don't limit yourself to the reclining Buddha
Many people see and pass this Wat, easily identified by the huge reclining Buddha from the road but it is worth taking the road up the hill to look further. The courtyard of the Wat is very nicely laid out as are the building outside. There is a handy little shop where you can get some refreshments as well. Worth the stop.
