Underground Mining Museum, Pernik Province, Bulgaria

Worth the time!

I learned about this museum 6 months ago and was waiting to visit it. Was there in early December, a small company with kids. Museum was very well organized. We entered at 1600 and it took about 40 minutes to go through it. The hostess and the exposition was really worthy. I would strongly recommend this visit. Even if Pernik is not your list of towns to go to.

Here in a unique way is shown the work of miners. The museum is a famous Bulgarian landmark, unique by its kind.

Close look at a real coal mine
The museum is quite interesting indeed, especially if you haven't seen/thought/researched much about coal mining before. The only one of its kind in Bulgaria and in the Balkans. It is a very well preserved real coal mine which has been exploited up to some point in the 60's. There is a tour guide who gives a good explanation of the whole process, plus some cuirous details about everyday life in the mine. No idea if there is an option for a tour in English. Have in mind that you only go inside in groups, so the visit is on the hour every hour on weekends. It can be quite chilly inside, as you go in 50 m below the ground. Would give it 4.5 stars as the guide was particularly strict about making sure everyone has paid their entrance fee and the fact that you only get to take 2 pictures for free inside. If you want to take more pics, you need to pay extra.
