Very interesting of the life of the Dutch in Giethoorn

Start your visit to Giethoorn in Museum Giethoorn 't Olde Maat Uus! The museum is located in an original historical farmhouse. It is the only place in Giethoorn where you can see how people lived more than 100 years ago and how they earned a meagre living by cutting peat and building small boats (‘punters’).

Nice small museum, very entertaining and educational
Nice small museum which gives you all the information about the past of the area. Amazing to know that the landscape as it is today was man-made. All the canals were dug out by workers who cut turf which was used as fuel for fire, for heating and cooking. The museum tells you all about how it came about, how the people used to live and what life was like hundreds of years ago. Very educational and interesting. Nice for the whole family. A visit will take you 1-2 hours.

    Tips when visiting Giethoorn
Giethoorn, known as Dutch Venice, has more waters ways than roads. To be honest, there is only one walking pathway going through it. Here is our tip when visiting Giethoorn: 1. Walking distance Make sure you can go the distance. Once you are in Giethoorn, you can not be picked up by car. By boat yes but the boats travels in one direction in the village. The road consists of flat asfalt and wooden bridges. Things on wheels , like baby strollers, shouldn’t have any problems here. 2 Boat rental - There are all metal boats with electric motors: whisper boat and larger sloop. - You can rent for minimum 1 hour and up to the size of your wallet. Make sure you check the weather before hand so you don’t get stuck in the rain. 1 hour is just enough to go around the village during corona shut down. 2 or more if you want to go around the wetland around Giethoorn. - Bring a wind jacket for when you are out on open water. - Go slow! We had a good laugh when we corkscrewed in the middle of canal! 3. Planning Besides boating in Giethoorn, there are museum, church, boutiques and restaurants. All reachable by foot and boats. 4. Camper sites There are 3 camper sites within walking distance 1km from Giethoorn. All spacious and neatly maintained.
