Athenaeum Bibliotheek, Overijssel Province, The Netherlands

4.5 (2 reviews) Spent < 1 hour Ranking #23 in Deventer Libraries

It doesn't have to be impressive or majestic to earn a five point rating

The Athenaeum Library and City Archive is situated on the grounds of the Deventer Convent (hence the address Klooster 12), in a heritage building. Is is a dependance of the Deventer Public Library. What makes a visit to the Athenaeum Library so special is the modest exhibition of medieval books (hand written by monks and also earliest printed books), with hand written annotations of the owners from the Middle Ages. One book showed an extensive comment by the famous Desiderius Erasmus. Because of the exhibition of these treasures I rate this library with the modest exhibition five points. No wonder Deventer is the books capital of the Netherlands. As these are convent grounds, a nice and quiet sit-down can be had in the Convent garden opposite the library.
