Terranova, Ostrobothnia, Finland

4.5 (29 reviews) Tuesday: 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM Spent Ranking #3 in Vaasa Speciality Museums

A must-see museum

If you have time only for one museum, this is it. Terranova presents the Kvarken archipelago, which was chosen in 2006 to become Finland's first natural heritage site on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. It shows the development of the Earth and the land uplift phenomenon which has formed the natural environment in the Kvarken region. It presents all the animals living here. In the same building are also other exhibitions belonging to the Ostrobothnian Museum: the history of Vaasa, art and antique exhibitions. So it is easy to spend many hours here. And everything with the same entrance fee.

    World heritage
If one wants to get to know Vasa and its surroundings, this is the place to go. The landrising in the area is a world Record which affects the nature in an obvious way. In this Museum one can learn all about it. If one doesn’t have a car to go and explore by oneself, this is a good option. Be sure to visit the part called Terra Nova.

    The very good biological museum
Terranova is situated in the same building with "Pohjanmaan Museo - Osterbottens Museo" (read separate Tripadvisor reviews) and you may visit both of them with the same ticket. Terranova is a very good biological museum. You could call it a natural science exhibition, too. It specializes in local nature, especially the Kvarken archipelago (Merenkurkun saaristo), which is Finland's first natural heritage site on the list of UNESCO. It was a good idea to get to know this exhibition first and then visit Saltkaret (an observation tower, read separate Tripadvisor reviews) in Mustasaari to see these same things in real nature. Terranova is a modern and well-kept museum. I really recommend it. Besides, it is easy to visit there, because it is situated almost in the city center.
