A birthday weekend side trip worth making!
We made a side trip to Silverton and Drake’s Crossing for the Silver Falls State Park which contains ten waterfalls in relatively close proximity to each other. It was a hot Summer day on August fourth with virtually no breeze but it was well worth the trip for the beauty and the gorgeous views of South Falls. While we could not afford the time to view other adjacent falls of which there are nine we very much enjoyed the South Falls and wading in the water before it goes into those falls. We did not walk under the Falls as you can on this trip or walk the entire trip to the bottom as we have in milder weather. It was time exceedingly well spent and the view of the fir trees and the falls are majestic. There is a lodge that sells ice cream cones, drinks and sandwiches but the quality of the ice cream has gone downhill since my last visit and is more like a tasteless vanilla or chocolate or swirled combo cone of ice milk rather than the creamy tasty ice cream I remember and I would not recommend the current reincarnation compared to that of days of old. Parking is only five dollars a day making it a bargain day trip during coronavirus for the whole family and we saw many families attending! Highly recommended and we look forward to visiting it again soon!

    Fantastic trails and waterfalls
This is a premier 9,000 acre park that is about 1.5 hours south and east of Portland . It is in a beautiful thick forest at about 1600 ft elevation . And a beautiful river runs through it . I drove directly to the cute little town of Silverton . Then up to the N Falls entrance. There is another entrance further south on highway 5, South Falls . Get to the park in the morning as early as you can . It opens at 7 am ..I wanted to go on the Winter Falls Trail , so I parked there . Going on this trail , you travel about an hour down the canyon past 5 waterfalls . Easy walking going downhill ... not very steep . Take your face mask , many people were wearing them . I turned around and headed back after I got to the bridge going over the river at the Lower North Falls . . There are no bathrooms ! The trek back up was about 15 min longer for me , because its mainly all uphill . For younger people it is no big deal , but for older people it takes time , and there are benches to sit on at strategic spots . Take your time . I would say the hike back as moderate . I got fantastic waterfall photos , and was able to walk behind one of the Falls , that is over 100 ft tall . I loved the hike . As good an experience as waterfalls in the Gorge that is jammed with people. The largest parking lot is at the South Falls area. Many more Falls down there too . I highly recommend this park .Oh ... $5 cash per day for parking , or $30 /year for trail pass to all state parks . You'll love it .
