Outstanding. Best museum experience in years

The Canadian Canoe Museum stewards the world's largest collection of canoes, kayaks and paddled watercraft. More than 600 in number, the watercraft and their stories of national and international significance, have a pivotal role to play in our collective future. PLEASE NOTE: the last day to visit the current museum at 910 Monaghan will be Labour Day (September 5, 2022) before we close to prepare to move to our new home at 2077 Ashburnham Drive (opening summer 2023!).

Great find - Canadiana and Canoe history & culture.
This is a great treasure of Canadiana history and the history of the canoe in (primarily) North American history. Coverage in the historic collection cover West, Central, Northern, and Eastern indigenous canoe/kayak items of exceptional quality and historical authenticity. Great respect shown for the indigenous history and contributions to the collection. Wonderful selection of birch bark and dugout canoes. The area devoted to the fur trade and the Voyageurs (Courriers du Bois) is exceptionally well done. Many hands on experiences for young and old. Many curated live displays of workshops and audiance experiences with artisans and actual live demonstrations of workmanship are normally part of the exhibits. This has been suspended during COVID). Nice little gift shop as well. This display will be moving to a brand new exhibition building in about 2 years and the preparations to move the collection are underway. I especially liked the small display of Pierre Elliot Trudeau and his famous deerskin jacket.

Fascinating museum which linked history of canoe building to exploration of Canada
The Canadian Canoe Museum is a real gem. It doesn't look much from the outside but it is amazing. It highlights the use of canoes by early European traders who learned from the indigenous people how to navigate their way round the country and trade by river, lake and stream by canoe. With over 150 canoes on display and 500 more in storage, the museum is a great place to learn about canoes and about the development of Canada following European settlement. It also highlights the development of canoe building expertise and Peterborough's role as the centre of Canadian canoe building. There is so much to see and experience that there is not enough space here to do so. Just visit as you will not be disappointed. There is something for all ages. My 80+ year mother visiting from Scotland had a great time as she got a chance to dress up AND play with puppets!
