Port Dover Harbour Museum, Ontario, Canada

Great insight into Port Dover

A great museum with free entry when visiting Port Dover. Also free parking right next door. Lots of exhibits and information regarding the history of fishing in Lake Eerie and how that created Port Dover and effected the lives of those that lived here. Even found information about fishermen from next door village to our own in Scotland who moved across there! Really good for kids and adults - plenty to see and interact with.

You'd be amazed by what you learn in this small museum!
I have visited Port Dover the last 4 years, cycling and hiking around, but never paid attention to the museum which was tucked away on a small road, close to the river. Well, I was in for a pleasant surprise when I finally decided to go in yesterday. a) For one, there is no admission fee, although I would not mind paying a couple of dollars or so, so that proceeds can go to developing the gardens around the museum. b) The lady at the front came out of her office when she heard me come in to greet me and asked me if I had been there before. She then proceeded to give me some information about the displays and the back portion of the museum, which used to be the cockpit of a barge. c) the diversity of the collection they have there is just amazing ... from nets, to huge wooden rudders, to anchors, to the old system of warning sailors about weather, books, maps, portraits, and a lot of things that go into a boat from centuries ago can be seen here. If you're into sailing and boats, there truly is a wealth of information here. d) Long Point, I learned, is witness to hundreds of shipwrecks. Yes, it is truly worth visiting this small museum.

An interesting story about local marine happenings
We learned a lot about Lake Erie mariners and the struggle for seamen in the past. The story about the end of the "Atlantic" was a highlight.
