Huron County Museum, Ontario, Canada

4.5 (99 reviews) Sunday: Spent Ranking #3 in Huron County Speciality Museums

Local and regional museum gem!

A surprisingly comprehensive and very well laid-out and extensive museum collection specializing in local and regional historical artifacts, up to and including steam tractors and a large steam locomotive housed indoors and and surrounded by related and diverse equipment and paraphernalia. Includes an excellent tribute to local military personnel and bases involved in the two world wars, and to Great Lakes shipping. A real pleasure to tour and one that requires time to explore. Don't miss it if you're visiting Goderich!

    Unique Presentations
The museum is self-guided but well laid out with directional arrows and an accompanying map. Some exhibits are very creative being (bicycles) hung from the ceiling for example. Some of the larger steam and farm equipment is displayed so that you can walk among the pieces and get a real sense of their size, weight and robustness. There are ample washroom facilities, an elevator and a particular set of stairs that should be an exhibit themselves with each tread worn with the footsteps of literally hundreds of visitors and residents before them.

    Open again
Open after a long hiatus, the Huron County Museum currently asks you to book your time for a visit and allows only a handful of people to be in the museum at the same time. There are no special exhibitions at the moment, but the permanent collection is well worth viewing, especially the exhibition on the great storm of 1913 as well as the military collection.
