State Capitol, Oklahoma, United States

Don’t miss this .

We visited the state capitol building for a free something to do out of the heat. We were very surprised and happy with our visit. The building itself inside has been redone and itself is a work of art. The murals and detailing in the rotunda are so beautiful. While we were there they were completing the placement of over 40 very large new paintings of the people and topography of Oklahoma. There is a free museum on the first floor. I would recommend that you start on the top floor of the rotunda and work your way down each floor to see the art work.

    Very Impressive State Capitol
We decided to visit the capitol building on our Saturday visit to the city. It is very impressive. It's probably the only capitol in the country with a replica of an oil derrick in the front. This place is undergoing a major construction/renovation project so the front doors were all locked. One of the guys redoing the landscaping told us to go around to the side where we were able to get in. We were the only visitors in the building I think. Just a thought but I'm not sure they need FOUR guards at the entry point on a Saturday in October when it seems they don't have many visitors. They were all definitely bored. One of the guards said the project was costing $250 million and rising!! Very impressive on the inside, too. Unfortunately all the paintings etc were off the walls due to construction.

One of the most beautiful we've ever seen.
I've been visiting state capitols since my neighbor in Florida got us hooked on visiting state capitols when he told me I had to see the Austin, Texas state capitol. Since then we've visited state capitols from Florida to Maine and from New York to California and also Alaska and Hawaii. The one in Oklahoma City is one of our favorites as it has a beautiful sign signaling the State Park Capitol Area complete with oil rigs and early oil wells. The building and grounds are also beautiful. Don't miss the top of the rotunda with the Native American on top.
