What a great and interesting place.

Wow what a find this was. At the Shattuck Windmill Museum and Park they have a huge selection of all different windmills. Coming from the UK we never knew how life giving windmills where to get the water from the ground. Its run by older volunteers who love what they do and have many stories to tell. We had some great conversations about the past, the dust bowl and the history of the area. Its free but they do rely on donations to help with the up keep of the windmills. In the small gift shop they have lovely items made by the locals. Stop here for an hour, its great fun.Its run by really lovely people, just like the best grandparents you could ever wish for.

    An excellent slice of Americana
On a motorcycle trip, we happened to ride by this wonderful slice of Americana along Highway 283. The windmill was an important part of rural American life in the 1800's to the early 1900's, and this museum preserves many type and models of windmills. The museum has many different models, the variety of these machines is amazing. The staff, or docents, are very knowledgeable about the technical specifications and operations of these grand machines. Doug told us of the history and the dates of each of the. I will say that Doug gave us a wonderful tour of the windmills and the grounds, which include a turn of the century prairie home. The home has a small windmill just outside which was used to charge batteries to provide power to the radio in the evenings.

    Worth the stop
Excellent museum located on US Hwy 283. There is an extensive collection of windmills; many of which were in action the day we stopped. There is also a pioneer dugout and turn of the century farmhouse that have been moved to this location. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable; eager to share the history of this museum as well as the surrounding area. This is definitely worth the stop. We'll be going back in the fall and taking the family with us this time.
