Nice place to visit as part of a day trip to the area.

This is a very nice park! We visited in January as part of day trip to the area. We first visited the park office, which includes a tiny gift shop. The staff was super friendly and super helpful. The lady there gave us lots of info about not only the park, but also the wildlife refuge and the surrounding areas. We drove down to the spillway and walked from the top of the dam all the way down to the bottom of the spillway. Lots of great views and lots of birds. We also drove through the rest of the park and stopped down by the lake where there were great views of the lake and the dam. There were very few people here in January when we visited. But the facilities look great (including the campsites, cabins, playgrounds, and bathrooms). Looks like a great place for family fun when the weather is a bit warmer.

    something different
Great salt plains state park, Jet, Oklahoma is a great place to visit. There is spillway fishing, swimming (from sandy beach campsite area), hiking, birding, wildlife galore! You can camp in the rv sites with tents if you need electricity, there is water available throughout the campsites. There are primitive campsites on both sides of the spillway. You can take your own boat out onto the lake for the day. Within 15 miles (near Cherokee) is the salt plains dig site if you wish to dig for selenite crystals. Campsites are at state park fees, digging is free. you must have a fishing license to fish for catfish, flathead or other fish. The dig site is closed during the winter months, but camping, hiking, fishing is available all year long. The park has been working on building renovations, and most of the shower/bathrooms have been refurbished. Nicest park rangers I have ever met work here.
