A Night in the Woods

There is a wonderful primitive campsite just a short hike from the parking lot. A group of friends and I had headed out late one evening and hiked out to it at night, which unfortunately meant we weren’t able to alert the park rangers or register our vehicle. After a beautiful night out in the woods, we hiked back and were confronted by 2 rangers standing around our vehicle. Much to my surprise, they weren’t there to slap ridiculous fines on us or belittle us. They showed genuine concern for our safety, and once they understood the situation, they just let us off without any extra fines. A highly recommend this park if you want a break from the hustle and bustle of life, or a change of pace from the larger state parks that hardly allow camp fires even.

Couldn’t have asked for a better campsite
Book your camping trip online then no need to check in. Hiking trails were perfect and beautiful. Trail map and distances are off, but it’s impossible to get lost. Just keep walking. Mix of everything on the trails. FYI the trails marked for bikes are only for the most advanced mountain bikers. Rv sites were concrete and provided plenty of area. Park rangers were great. Showed us where to find owls, and even stopped at our spot to warn us of rain, and took our garbage when he left. Pool is public and really nice but it’s $6 to get in. Nice picnic area by the pool and don’t miss the natural spring close to the pool. General store is quaint, staff is very helpful and they serve pretty good food. Bathrooms and showers are newer, clean and free. Firewood is very expensive. Park rules state no drinking over 3.2% and no smoking, but the rangers didn’t care as long as you weren’t out of hand. Had such a great time last month we are going again this month.

Review of Full Moon Hike at Roman Nose State Park
Although described as 4 miles, our route was just 3 miles, with an elevation gain of 255 feet, and took just under 2 hours. We met at 7, but didn't actually begin hike until around 7:30. The guide, who has been leading these for several years, handed out glow sticks and gave basic safety information before leading about 30 of us up to Inspiration Point, where we sat down (only 1 bench) and waited for the moon to rise in the NE. Lots of picture taking, and then we headed back down the way we came up. Needed a coat for after sundown, this time of year. You will need water and a flashlight, or use your phone's flashlight. Hiking shoes are good for the roots and rocks. A fun experience.
