Engaging Museum .... Well Worth the Visit

Very investing museum established in 1960 that has evolved with time. The museum has several engaging hands-on exhibits. * Most innovative was a 3D sand table that dynamically sensed sand contours (i.e. sand above the table) and projected contour lines and color-coded "elevation" map on the sand. Innovative introduction / visualization appropriate for all ages. * Hands on exhibit of a mechanical wind mill (for example used to pump water from a well). * Hands on exhibit of a wind turbine for converting wind to electrical energy. Encourages experimentation with different blade shapes and number of blades to maximize energy conversion. Many other educational exhibits about the Great Plains (1) Geography (2) People and (3) History.

    Excellent museum
We received free tickets to this museum as part of our hotel package. Good thing we did as we probably would not have visited otherwise as it was an excellent museum. Kids would LOVE this museum - very interactive with lots of things to touch and play with. They even have an animatronic dinosaur display that is very cool. They also have an outdoor display with a neat guy dressed up as a pioneer who told us interesting stories. We spent about 2 hours here but if we brought kids, we probably would have spent all day here!

impressive educational interactive museum for all ages
I'm from Chicago so hadn't expected much from Museum of the Great Plains, but I was quite impressed. I found a very large amount of interactive, educational exhibits for children and many informative exhibits for adults. Indoors, I enjoyed the exhibits on buffalo, journalism, trade, and farming on the plains. The biographies of historical figures were educational. The tornado simulation and film were well done. I didn't have time to see the regularly programmed films in the museum's mini-theater. Outdoors, the guide in the log cabin meticulously described everyday items and details of life that we take for granted. The prairie dog town outside was a new sight for me, too. I'd planned for an hour visit, stayed about two hours, and could have stayed longer.
