Heavener Runestone Park, Oklahoma, United States

4.5 (112 reviews) Tuesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent Ranking #2 in Heavener Parks

Gorgeous, Shaded, Unexpected

I stayed three nights (I used HipCamp to book) at an electric site and had a completely great time. There are several very good hiking trails, and the sites are deeply shaded with pines and hickories. There are lots of playgrounds nearby and a stellar scenic overlook within a three minute walk. The runestone is always fascinating to see. The exhibits need updating but the current managers are working on improvements. The stonework going down to the runestone is of fine quality. Just a pretty park away from town (but town within sight in a valley below). The locals love it here, there are lots of groups with kids frolicking.

    pleasant camping experience
first, it's important to note that the story about the vikings origin of the stones in this park is a myth. 1, no archaeological evidence exists of vikings ever having been in the area. 2, the very idea of vikings, maritime travelers, forging so deeply into the continent at the time when vikings existed is preposterous. that having been said, the park, with its trails, campsites, facilities, waterfall, flowing streams and panoramic view offers an excellent camping experience. i thoroughly enjoyed my camping experience there and commend amanda, the park supervisor, for her hospitality and professionalism.

    Beautiful Walk
We only walked along the top part of the path, but this area is very peaceful and pretty. We stopped by in August, but I bet in the fall the trees will be absolutely gorgeous. The kiosks at the beginning of the trail is very interesting and sheds light onto the history of the Runestone. I can not wait to go back and hike down to the building at the bottom. It looked very interesting. - We were not prepared our we would have went down there on this trip.
