Snow fun and sunshine
St Lary is a small friendly resort that is child friendly. There is a great ski school for all levels. Unlike the Alps It is cheaper and easy to access the slopes. We were fortunate to have lovely weather. The village was sunny and warm. The mountain top ten minutes in the Telerphique sunny and blue. The French ski school has English speaking instructors and the little one 4 had a brilliant time in the Piau Piau club.

Beginners get short changed and avoid school holidays
This resort bills itself as being family-friendly, with the result that the beginners area is absolutely packed during French school holidays - the Bordeaux region was on holiday when we were there. Queuing for 45 minutes to go up the tapis on the main beginners slope was ridiculous as you could walk up it in half the time. Monday morning in the beginners area was like rush hour at King's Cross station, with the ski schools packing them in like sardines. To summarize, there is a very small area for total beginners in the main resort (1700 Pla D'adet), that gets way too busy because of all the ski schools. Good luck getting the telepherique up or down the mountain at peak times too! I you are a mixed ability group then the beginners area is miles away from the main (decent) ski area, which is better reached from the other side of the mountain at Saint Lary 1900. We stayed in the main village at the foot of the mountain which was good as the resort at pla d'adet was totally charmless, and traffic choked. If you are determined to go, just pick your week very carefully.
