Manhattan Project National Historical Park, Tennessee, United States

4.0 (48 reviews) Spent 2-3 hours Ranking #4 in Oak Ridge Historic Sites

The main reason for our visit to Oak Ridge was for the Manhatten Project history

As others have said, the National Park is a number of different areas within Oak Ridge. We found that starting at the main museum gave us an over view as well as help from the volunteers to the other locations of interest in the town. There is a bus that goes out early, but we didn't use that, we self toured

    Informative Ranger with great Information
When you follow the signs to the Manhattan Project National Historic Park, You arrive at the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge. Inside there is a single desk with a park Ranger that explains that the park is not a single location but many individual sites around Oak Ridge. They will give you a Visitor guide and map that will direct you to the various points of interest that were an important part of the Manhattan Project. The ranger we spoke with was very informative and very knowledgeable about the sites. Worth stopping in to get a map then spending the day driving around to see the various points of interest.

    Wait until COVID is over
Very confusing. As other reviewers have said, the ‘visitors center’ is just a desk in the lobby of the children’s museum. There was a map that could be used for a self guided tour of the city. Unfortunately, due to COVID the bus tour of more sites in the area has been suspended. We did however get a lot of information at the American Museum of Science and Energy from a wonderful volunteer named jerry. We knew the bus tours were suspended because we had read the alerts on the NPS website. The staff at the desk in the visitors center was really unhelpful. We had to ask to see the ‘short film’ mentioned on the webpage (it was really short-only 2 minutes) but he did give us a map. Would like to go back when the bus tours resume.
