International Friendship Bell, Tennessee, United States

5.0 (4 reviews) Spent Ranking #9 in Oak Ridge Monuments & Statues

Alright Attraction

A little walk takes you to the Bell, which has the places and dates, atomic bombs were dropped, along with the dates of Pearl Harbor bombing during WR II. I couldn’t find an explanation of where the bell came from or any other info on it but it is a nice place to visit.

GREAT place to visit in Oak Ridge. Should be on the top 5 things to do!
We happened upon this GREAT place to visit! The bell and the history are SO fascinating to learn about. It is definitely a MUST see when in the Oak Ridge area. A very hands-on location. Loved, loved, loved visiting here!!!

More modern and sterile than before
The original supports for the Friendship Bell try to emulate the Japanese setting but used lumber which couldn't handle the climate or pests and deteriorated over a few decades We Americans are not willing to invest the amount of money or effort to get the right material if we can get cheaper stuff locally. Instead of honoring the gift we did a half^sses job with inferior materials and then replaced those with ones suited to a highway overpass. The wood used for supporting the bell in Japan has endured hundreds of years with minimal maintenance, and allows that bell to resonate as intended.
