Haw Ridge Park, Tennessee, United States

4.5 (38 reviews) Spent Ranking #3 in Oak Ridge Parks

wonderful park in OR

Lot of opportunities for activities here. You can park in several spots and walk on a nice paved greenway from the Edgemoor bridge on Melton Lake Drive to the Solway area. There are even water fountains at both ends. Where do I start: greenway a great place to walk or run or ride bikes. Have done all these as well as gone on birdwalks with local experts (hint start at 8 or 9 and park at west end/walk east on boardwalk through the river (under bridge) and you'll see 30 or 40 species, as did I. Haw Ridge itself has hills and flat trails for serious mountain biking or hiking. On a nice day, the lot near the Solway bridge with dozens of cars as the locals all know what a great place this is. Connected to miles and miles of trails (hint: get free maps at termini, or find online. It gets confusing wiithin the HR park itself). Portapotties, water fountains

    Good safe hike/walk/trail
While visiting the Oak Ridge area with our 2 four legged kids, I wanted to find a safe place for an early morning walk. An internet search popped up this park, other than the fact that the milage is not marked this is a good park. There is a paved walkway that runs 5 miles, if you park in the main parking lot and walk to the bridge its 2.1 miles one way. Alot of parks only have trash cans at the parking lot, which means you have to carry any waste out. This one has cans along the way which makes it very convenient to dispose of waste. Its shaded for a good part, goes by the river and has enough people using it to feel safe but not crowded.

Challenging mountain bike terrain for better riders
By avoiding the main parking lot, and working the north half of the area, better mountain bikers will find everything from fast rollers to steep transitions, rock, roots, and obstacles. Find old, old maps, which hold clues to old routes that have long since disappeared from daily use. Some of it is damn scary, lots of it is just an approximation, with the footprint long gone. Make sure you have your climbing legs with you. There are some tough climbs. Main (lower) trails are still fun, just a bit wider, muddier, with less elevation change. Careful- you can get hurt out there, or break stuff. Take a buddy.
