Lake Simbi Nyaima, Nyanza Province, Kenya

4.5 (4 reviews) Spent More than 3 hours Ranking #2 in Homa Bay Bodies of Water

Full of Myth

We passed by here briefly during a work trip to Homa bay. It wasn't my first trip, however, it had taken years since my last visit. We drove round the lake. Paid a guide to share the narrative or myth about the Lake. It a great place to visit, especially with small children so that they can learn a bit about culture and history. Simbi Nyaima is less that 5 minutes drive from Homa bay - Kendu bay road. You branch off at River Kibuon, opp. Obama Road.

Simbi is an underutilised resource which should be generating income to people and the county government.
Simbi Nyaima is a fun place. Its a relatively small area which is Located few metres from Lake victoria and lies beside L. Kibuon which drains into Lake Victoria. Simbi is purely mythical according to stories by the villagers. But it can be explained geographically. During my stay around the place, for one year, visitors used to come and students, trying to learn more. The county government of Homa-bay has not done much to help because Simbi is a reserved resource which needs to be utilised for the betterment of the community. It should have a fence, a parking lot for vehicles and a resting shade. SO that for every entry, the people should pay fees, as an appreciation for nature...the socioeconomic values. My proposal is still underway, which I will recommend the HBC governemnt to provide its due support to see Simbi being an historical site for locals and foreign visitors. Its a beautiful place.

A LAKE WITH A MYTH STORY
We drove from Kisumu via Katito Homa bay road after reading the myth of a woman denied beer in a party of revelers and she cursed the party where upon torrential rains began falling and submerged the whole village into a saline lake. You may find isolated lesser flamingos indicating it is saline lake. The locals believe that the water treats different kinds of diseases especially skin related cases. The villagers of Karachuonyo have lots of stories to tell about the Western rift valley lake.
