Grand Cascade - view from the top
Grand Cascade fountains are a must see if you are in St Petersburg. Peter the Great was heavily influenced by French style and a trip to Versailles from which he clearly drew inspiration. There are some similarities with Villa D'Este (Rome) too. A massive reconstruction took place after demolition during WW2 and the fountains are amazing. I am glad I went. There are some lovely fountains and views to be seen through the Park but not an awful lot in the way of flowers. Highly Recommended

Do NOT miss. You need to see it to believe it.
This was one of the highlights of my trip to Russia. It's easy to grab a boat next to the Winter Palace and they leave every 30 minutes - they are timed so you need to plan a little bit. It takes about 45 minutes to get there, but you get some great views along the way. The outside of the Palace is extraordinary. It was Peter the Great's summer residence and he wanted to outdo his European rivals. He did. It has more gold and more fountains than Versailles, its closest competitor. The fountains are still an engineering marvel and they create a very peaceful atmosphere amongst the throngs of tourists. I mean, there were tons and tons of people there, even off season. The gardens are lovely, and you can just imagine everyone from Catherine the Great to Czar Nicholas II wandering through them...just like you. Plan to spend a few hours here, more if you want to wait in line and see the inside of the Palace. This is the palace of every child's fantasy. Please don't miss it.

Average apart from the fountains
There are very extensive gardens at Peterhof that are usually not included in guided tours because of time restrictions. Since we were on a private tour with plenty of time, we had an extended walk around the gardens after visiting the palace (reviewed separately) but I must say that apart from the main fountains and the gardens immediately adjacent to these, the remainder were fairly average. Some small fountains, classic statuary, topiary hedges, etc but nothing that you wouldn't see at dozens of other classical gardens. So definitely see the fountains but don't worry if you don't see the rest of the gardens (only 2.5 stars without the fountains).
