The oldest Gothic cathedral in Russia

The oldest Gothic cathedral in Russia is located on Kant Island. Its construction was carried out from 1333-1380. In August 1944, all the buildings on the island were destroyed, the cathedral was completely burned out from the inside and stood in ruins until the early nineties, when its gradual restoration began. Now there are no services in the cathedral, there are concerts of organ music and there are museum expositions.

    Saved by ... Immanuel Kant
Yes! In December 1967 local communist authorities asked Moscow for a permission to destroy what was left of the cathedral after 1944 British carpet bombings and build a park and a WWII memorial on that place. Thanks God, they did not get what they wanted - mostly because Kant's tomb was there. I saw that magnificent construction in May, when trees were in blossom. It stood in all its splendor crowning Kneiphof Isle or Kant Island, as Russians prefer to call it today. Definitely, the cathedral looks much better at a distance since its reconstruction is far from over. The closer one approaches it the better this becomes obvious - windows covered with wooden (plywood?) panels, stained glass missing, walls to still be further renovated, etc. Anyhow, if one compares it with what one could see, say, twenty years ago, the job done looks like a miracle. There's a concert hall inside with great acoustics and a wonderful organ which professional player performs Show Must Go On from time to time - to die for! (The cathedral is not a place of worship but a cultural and musical center.) Not to be missed!

    rebuilt German cathedral
The reconstructed German cathedral of Konigsberg is an impressive structure, with a unique, not often replicated design. Easily accessible from the center, but best left for a day with good weather. I took a walk to see the thing myself, crossing the hammer and sickle bridge and descending to the Kant Island to see this rekindled Germanic cult palace. It was worth the time, I recommend it. Having not seen the interior, I cannot comment on it. The exterior however was quite picturesque.
