A beautiful church with a tower

Clérigos Tower is the foremost undisputed landmark of Porto and a reference in the city's history. Clérigos Tower opened its doors in 1763, becoming the highest bell tower of Portugal, with over 75 metres. In 1753 the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni was invited to design and build this magnificent Heritage, considered National Monument since 1910. The famous church was built in the eighteenth century, between 1732 and 1749 and this was the most emblematic work of the architect Nicolau Nasoni. Is one of the most beautiful temples of baroque feature, and a reference in the history of Porto. The Exhibitions allow to discover the history of the Brotherhood of Clérigos, admire pieces from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, in painting, furniture, jewellery and vestment collections. Christus collection, on the 3 floor, is a trip through time and space where art and religion complement each other.

    Worth the visit
We visited on a busy Sunday which we expected the weather wasn’t great but we queued for our tickets and came back half hour later , this gave us chance to admire the interior of the church from below . The museum is ok and the tour gave a higher perspective of the interior of the church before climbing the tower itself . The stairs themselves are narrow as expected but not in a continuous spiral which for me massively helped as usually I get quite dizzy in these situations. There are people descending at the same time so be prepared for that , we had booked the 11.30 slot which was perfect as when we did reach the top the church bells was ringing across the city , part of the tower goes through the bells so if desired you could deafen yourselves by being in the bell room when they rang ! Lovely views very cramped up there as other people had stated but I appreciated the experience, I feel like bags should be made to be kept in a locker or a clocke room as the likes of backpacks doesn’t help the small spaces . All in all definitely worth a visit .

Views of Porto and a beautiful church interior
Having read the reviews I was unsure whether we should bother with the Tower but was glad we did. We queued for a short time around 4pm and were asked to come back for 5pm. Beautiful church interior and good views of Porto from the top of the tower, particularly enjoyed the signage which showed the main buildings/points of interest that you could see from the top.
