Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral), Northern Portugal, Portugal

Worth a visit
Easy to locate, the Cathedral stands tall amongst the Porto skyline. The square around it affords great views of the Douro river below. At time of writing it costs 3euro per adult to enter. You are left to wander around, although there is a route to follow. Information boards are dotted in specific areas. Do climb the Tower staircase, as your efforts are rewarded at the top. I didn’t see anything to aid wheelchair users. The Cathedral has many little treasures to view and it is definitely worth a visit.

A church that seems fortified
This Romanesque-style cathedral (greatly altered during Baroque times), very close to the walls that once protected the city, has the evident characteristic of looking like a fortified church given the two square towers, crowned with a dome on either side of the simple facade. The vast forecourt in front of the cathedral is beautiful, which, being in an elevated position, allows an excellent view of the city and the river below. A pillory, standing in front of the cathedral, it may be used to hang criminals on it. During our visit the area was literally invaded by groups of tourists which made the visit a little less pleasant, even if it was certainly still very interesting.

Unusual
This is a very unusal Cathedral with it’s beautiful artistically decorated blue tile and decorative paintings. The admission ticket including the Bishop’s palace is a very good deal and recommended. We can also recommend climbing the tower as it is well worth it for the views over the city
