Centuries of military history

The treacherously steep climb up the rough and uneven stone stairway to the museum's doorway in the side of the tall tower inside the castle's inner walls is well worth he effort for those interested in the collection of weapons and armor from medieval times to World War II. Everything from the era of swords, steel helmets and chain mail to cannons from both Napoleonic invaders and the times of Ernest Hemingway. The history of so many defenders of this peaceful rural countryside and magnificent hilltop walled city are preserved here.

    Excellent Museum
Set inside the Braganca castle tower, the military museum offers lots of displays and information on Portugal's turbulent military past. The various rooms are on the many floor levels of the tower and contain artefacts and objects, with plenty of information about them. We were lucky enough to get a guided tour by the museum director, Paulo, who was very interesting and informative. Also his English was very good. Well worth a visit with the kids.

    A Pleasant Surprise
There is very little information about military museums in Portugal, so this one took me by surprise. Well kept, extraordinarily well maintained and the type of Museum that allows you to touch and feel history rather than just stare at it in glass cabinets. Very cheap admission. Check timetables before visting, though.
