Dedicated to the wine-making industry of the Douro Valley

The Douro Museum is housed in a restored former wine warehouse on the Douro riverfront. This modern museum is dedicated to the wine-making industry of the Douro Valley, the world’s oldest demarcated and regulated wine region. The Alto Douro wine region was inscribed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. The museum’s permanent exhibit, “Douro: Matter and Spirit” provides a comprehensive description of the history of the region, including the people, geography, and climate. There are also exhibits explaining the cultivation and harvesting of grapes on the steep hillsides, along with tools of the trade (exhibits are labelled in both Portuguese and English). We spent a good hour at the museum, and we were glad we made it our first stop in the region. A complimentary glass of port, served on the terrace, is included in the admission price. Parking in Régua can be a challenge. We found a public car park after making a few wrong turns, then walked a short distance to the museum.

    Great Museum
A great museum in a former warehouse showing the history of port wine making, with numerous fascinating artefacts. It showed the back-breaking work in the vineyards and the treacherous transportation of the barrels of port down the Douro River to Porto before the river was 'tamed.' We had an excellent guide showing us round. All exhibits have descriptions in Portuguese and English.

Too Many People - Too Little Air Conditioning
Informative museum gave a great overview of the Douro River and how tough life is for those who live and work there. Our tour guide was very good, but there were two other groups in close proximity to us and it made hearing her difficult. The exhibits included maps, descriptions of the various areas along the river, tools used to harvest the grapes, artwork from local artists, and dramatic re-telling of catastrophes that have occurred over time. It was the end of the day and the museum was very warm and felt as though the air conditioning had been turned off. If there had been fewer people inside at the same time, it would have been a better experience.
