Concrete architecture
The Oulu main library is located in front of the market square on a small island by the Oulujoki estuary. The four-story library building was completed in 1982. It was designed by the architect couple Marjatta and Martti Jaatinen. They also designed the city theater located next to the library. Both buildings are examples of concrete architecture. One wall is covered with windows which brings daylight inside. In addition to the main library, Oulu has 23 libraries around the city.
