The Polar Museum, Northern Norway, Norway

4.0 (2.643 reviews) Sunday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent Ranking #11 in Northern Norway Speciality Museums

Interesting stories about polar pioneers and explorations of recent and past centuries.

The Polar Museum is unassuming. Some the exhibits were a bit cheesy. Information in English was not available to describe everything on displayed. That said, we had a great experience at the Polar Museum. The cost of admission was modest and the much of the content highlighted historical information about Tromsø, Svalbard, and other northerly regions that was new to us. There were many fascinating stories. We were very glad that we visited this museum and are inspired to return to Norway to see the Fram museum in Oslo.

    Lots of info
The museum is focussed on pole expeditions and gives you a good idea of how these expeditions went in the past. Lots of things are shown and even situations have been rebuild. Info shown on the boards is most of the time in Norwegian, but you can get a little guide in other languages as well so you can read the info yourself.

    Well worth a visit
This is an excellent and unusual museum. However, if you do not speak Norwegian, apart from looking at the photos and the display there are many questions left. With English having become the lingua franca, it is a shame that the museum has not made more of an effort to translate all the information. They do provide a guide, but it is not really satisfactory. It is a pity because the museum is really well laid out - and in an interesting building. We realised that we could have organised a private guide, but it was not advertised. It would have helped.
