A five hundred-year-old church well maintained

The church was destroyed during the time Stephen the Great was reigning over. Another church was built over its ruins. Its devastation, occurring in the year 1513, caused its abandoning until the 17th century. It had been restored between 1898 and 1901, and had the honour of being painted by K. Jobst. Between 1990 and 2001 it was restored once again. The archaeological researches developed there revealed the tomb of Evdokia of Kiev, the first wife of Stephen the Great.

    Mosaics and frescos
The most impressive church in Suceava. St George sits in the middle of the monastery of St John. It was built in 1522 when Suceava was the capital of Moldavia. Although not as impressive as many of the other painted monasteries of Bucovina, you can still make out some great frescos on its exterior walls. They were painted during the reign of Stephen the Great. On the west wall you can see the red river of fire of "The Last Judgement". On the south wall you can see the "Tree of Jesse" which is like a biblical family tree. This church also has a unique mosaic roof. You might see monks wandering the grounds as you visit.
