Feet from the monument are the real attractions-the Gymnastica and Boxing Hall
The monument is fine to look at, but it is not the only attraction or indeed the main attraction. Immediately behind the monument are two striking building. Firstly, the Boxing Hall (see photo) designed in the 1960s by Mircea Mihalsecu (see photo). It's a wonderful strange building which is now looking its age. Secondly, the Gymnastica where Nadia Comaneci and the unbeatable Romanian gymnastics team trained in the 1970s. Both are right next door to each other and feet away from the monument. The gymanastica is another interesting building. Both buildings have very defined windows which are not dissimilar. What is striking is that both were built during Communist austerity and yet both were designed clearly with aesthetics in mind and not just function. The monument is worth taking a peek at but it does not compare to the two building. If, like me, you marvelled at "little miss perfect" when she dazzled the World in 1976, it was strange to see the place she trained. Sadly, Onesti itself has little more to offer and is largely a town of rundown and crumbling apartment blocks. Sad, but the people are friendly and I did not regret my visit.

A monument for the Romania's Women Gymnastics Team at the 1976 Montreal Olympics
A monument for the Romanian Women's Gymnastics Team at the 1976 Montreal Olympics: 1. Nadia Comaneci 2. Theodora Ungureanu 3. Mariana Constantin 4. Anca Grigoraş 5. Gabriela Truşcă 6. Georgeta Gabor Coaches: Bela and Marta Karolyi Note: Even if "the winner takes it all", a tribute must be paid to the coaches, to the number 2 and the other four members in this team; maybe for this reason they are two gymnasts in the top of this monument and all the names mentioned at the bottom.
