Northbrook Historical Society and History Museum, Illinois, United States

4.5 (8 reviews) Spent Ranking #5 in Northbrook Speciality Museums

Goo job of summarizing Northbrook's growth.

As small, local historical Societys go this one is excellent . Set in a transplanted Inn and with a dedicated group of volunteers the Inn is open on both floors and has a small consignment shop filled with treasures. A couple of books on the area are available for sale, The Fabric of Our Lives details the founding fathers and growth from a small, largely German farming community to an upscale suburb of Chicago.

Lovely place to take the family
I love going because I love the historical parts of Northbrook and being able to share it with my family. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. They do a great job with Shermerfest.

Just what you'd expect from an attraction with a '1776' address.....
When a Chicago-Milwaukee trip took two days, the Northfield Inn was a popular half-way stopover. The building was moved to its present location on the south end of the Village Green in Northbrook and lovingly restored. It still is a great place to stop! The basement and first floor are ramp accessible. The second floor, which is a recreation of an 1890s home, is not. The museum is filled with wonderful exhibits. All the rooms (sewing room, kitchen, bathroom, parlor, bedrooms, etc.) look as if the residents have just stepped out for a few minutes and will be returning soon. The museum is staffed by dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers. The current hours are Thursday 10 - 2; Sunday 2 - 4. There is plenty of parking (enter the lot from the east) and there's a playground on the Green to add to your family's enjoyment. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
