Idyllic on a warm sunny day
We were staying in Hasenfeld quite close to the Schwammenauel starting point for the boat. We chose to do a 45 minute single trip to Rurberg where we were then able to sit for a few hours by the Naturfreibad (free and lovely with plenty of shade) before going to the local ice cream cafe and then walking the 7 miles back through the woods. A perfect day. Don't expect the boat to leave on time - German punctuality seems to be a myth here - our boat was about 10 minutes late leaving and one that we watched the previous day was also running late!

Lovely Boat Trip.
The advantage is that you can can choose between several roundtrips over the lake or just get a one way ticket to other places and combine it with a walking tour. We did the latter. The boats have been modernazed and offer drinks and snacks to make your trip even more enjoyable. Of course, on sunny days, the roof top offers the most beautiful views, although you should be careful not to get a sun burn.

Reasonable trip but beware which one
We asked for the one hour cruise but the man on the boat said we were on the two hour cruise and could not get off so we paid for the two hour cruise (to see a concrete damn). Of course we stopped and people got off and had only paid for the one hour cruise so basically we were ripped off by the company. Not a great way to treat tourists. Was planning to do more cruises but not likely now.
