Beautiful Ancient Waterway

So many ways to experience this beautiful river. The lower reaches are tidal and the river looks beautiful on a full tide. On a low tide watch the wading birds on the mudflats, so beautiful at sunset. See it from above in its full glory as it snakes through the city from the top of Durie Hill. Walk or cycle the paved riverbank. Take a leisurely trip on the Waimarie paddle steamer. Feeling energetic? Take a half day up to a 5 day kayak/canoe trip into the upper reaches. We drove the winding River Road through original small settlements dotted along the bank up to Pipiriki and then took a Whanganui River Adventures jetboat on a four hour trip further up the river to hike to the Bridge to Nowhere. It was amazing learning the history of the river and the area from our tour guide along the way. This river certainly has some tales to tell.

Amazing Tracey - The Rural Delivery Postie
Spent a wonderful day with Tracey the local Rural Mail Delivery lady. She picked us up from our Whanganui accommodation and after a quick stop at Savage Bakery (World famous in Whanganui!!) for Tracey to pick up delicious morning tea supplies we headed north on Whanganui River Road. Tracey shared lots of local knowledge and history and with her being from the area, the experience felt extra special. We got to meet and interact with many of her customers and were continually gobsmacked by the variety of scenery we were passing through. Got to stop at the beautifully restored Kawana Flour Mill, it felt like we had stepped back in time. Morning tea at the convent in Jerusalem was delightful, real coffee and the treats from Savage Bakery. If you want to discover lots of stuff the locals know about we would highly recommend this trip. Tracey is also able to arrange jet boating and canoe trips on the river as well as excursions to The Bridge to Nowhere, she is simply amazing!! NOTE: Tracey can only take two (2) passengers on her mail run.

    Steam paddle cruise upriver
Enjoyed the 2 hour trip (one hour there, one back) on The Waimarie. Probably wouldn't do it again, but glad we went. Recommend taking both sunhat and heavy coat; and wear dark clothes so the ash from the coal steam doesn't mess them up too much.
