Te Manawa Museum of Art, Science & Heritage, North Island, New Zealand
4.5 (239 reviews) Friday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent Ranking #2 in Manawatu-Wanganui Region Speciality Museums
Great way to spend a wet afternoon.
At the cultural heart of our city, Te Manawa draws art, science and heritage together to reflect our past, illuminate the present and inspire a creative and sustainable future for our growing region and its people. Our public want deeper and more energetic access to their museums. They want to see and hear their stories told, in their own voices. They are right to demand inclusion, representation and participation. These make for personal experiences that touch them emotionally, inspire them creatively and give life and mana to their collective heritage – making for an exciting place to live. The main goal of Te Manawa Museums Trust is to provide the people of Manawatū and beyond with interactive experiences in art, science and heritage. For us, it is all about connection. People should feel passionate and excited about, and attached to Te Manawa, the collections we care for, and the experiences we shape with them.

Great for preschoolers and young kids
There is a fun area for preschoolers to play near the entrance. And some activities and interactive displays that are for older kids. There is also a fascinating historical area about the history of this area. It details the Maori inhabitants and the ships of the Europeans and also has some exhibits showing the 50s-70s kind of era as well. You can grab a coffee from the front desk too.

Cool Interactive Activities for Children
On arrival, we unintentionally entered the Art Gallery instead of the museum which has the same name and is next door. However, in a central part of the building were Māori designed blocks for the children to enjoy buiding structures. The museum also had interactive children activities all throughout the building, and the children enjoyed the ball throwing, mirrors and fossil dig. We didn't get time to check out upstairs and the kids room, so will have to go back next time. Maybe some more signage on entry would help for directions - as we got a bit disorientated at times
