Honoring Those Who Served

We would har about Anzac Day frequently throughout our stay in New Zealand and Australia. Retrospectively I can tell you this was the best memorial we would visit. It not only honors those who lost their lives during World War I in Galipoli but also memorializes New Zealand heroes from the World War II, the South African War, the Vietnam War. the Korean War and battles in Malaysia. There are a number of areas around the park commemorating various events and people. And in December 2018 a special memorial recognized the men and women of the United States who were in New Zealand to protect it from the enemy during World War II. The park is worth a visit and some reflection.

    A Time For Remembrance
This is a beautifully designed place to remember the Fallen from the various wars and conflicts which NZ servicemen and women have been involved with from South Africa to Afghanistan. The plaques and displays are there to tell of our involvement without fuss and without sentimentality. There is also a Book of Remembrance containing the names of the Fallen and I gather this place is also a resource for those seeking to acquire a bit more background about family members who have served in the Armed Forces. There was a helpful curator on duty when I visited who was able to answer some of my questions about the memorial. It was a sobering time but also hugely worthwhile.

Stunning & Somber. A must see!
A visit to the capital of New Zealand is not complete without a visit to War Memorial Park. An easy walk up Taranaki st towards the hills from Courtney Place. The carillon is an outstanding architectural feature, flanked by the impressively imposing Dominion Museum building currently home to Peter Jackson's Great War Exhibition.( an absolute must see). Australians would be interested to see the Red Stone Memorial, which acknowledges the contributions ANZACS made together in the theatre of war. See the stunning tomb of the unknown warrior and if there at 5pm, be part of he Last Post as the flags are lowered for the day. Poignant and memorable.
