Kai Iwi Sand Lake, North Island, New Zealand

Clear and Stunning!!!

Well worth the detour on our way home, I have seen people posting these lakes and have been wanting to come for ages and I finally made it!! Honestly it’s clear and beautiful just like the photos show, we unfortunately came on a cloudy day but that still didn’t dampen the bliss of the water and our surroundings. You can drive up and park right by the lake too which is helpful for those with young children. A must do and we will be definitely going back at some stage.

    Beautiful fresh water lakes
There are three fresh water natural lakes, Kai Iwi, Taharoa, and Waikere. The largest lake is Taharoa Lake, it is the lake where visitors usually swim and do all water plays and water sports. Spacious white sandy beach, turquoise crystal clear blue water, with changing room and children playground, and at 100m away, a camping ground is available, what a lovely combination. You just need to traveling approx. 35 km north from Dargaville. Moreover visitors can do fishing trout here with proper license and limitations. On top of this, there are several hiking and cycling tracks around this domain.

Beautiful fresh water lake, busy on long weekends
We camped at Kai Iwi lakes over Auckland Anniversary weekend with primary school aged kids. It was a great spot for camping with good facilities, beautiful water and the pontoon to swim out to. We biked around the lake which was great too. The shop sells bread and milk and has nice food that is reasonably priced. The only down side was some of the other campers were pretty noisy and inconsiderate. It has a quiet time from 10:30pm which is pretty late when it is just a canvas tent between you and very loud music and parties. Not ideal and the quiet time should be much earlier. It was very busy with day visitors but there was plenty of room for everyone. Bring some shade as the trees havent quite reached a good height for shade yet.
