We stayed in Zaandam, as the cost of the hotels was a big saving on Amsterdam prices
The shopping area in Zaandam offers everything for a day of great shopping. Since a few years the city centre has transformed into an interesting architectural area. The traditional houses are mixed up with modern day aspects. When arriving by train, the first thing you see is the world famous Inntel Hotel. Next to it is the city's town hall. From here you walk straight into the shopping area!

Surreal architecture!
The station and the hotel outside are coloured in the distinctive green that characterises the houses in Zaan Region. The hotels exterior has all the seventy different gables. The effect it creates can be described as surreal to say the least.

placid, beautiful and cosy
Zaandam is a very beautful town very near to Amsterdam (10 minutes to Amstrdam Central with train) which is not crwoded. We enjoyed the beauty of Amsterdam withought beeing stucked in queus. I really suggest the town for staying because one can find low- and middle-price hotels there. Besides, there are some good restaurants there that one can enjoy tasty foods there.
